Inner interior designers can appear anytime in life. For me, I took over the basement of my unfinished parents and tried to turn it into my first design project. I delivered a quiet dining chair used to lecture my grandmother’s kitchen, and covered it with a blanket to make an emergency sofa for the children’s corner in the basement. Even as a young child, I know that this arrangement of furniture requires a coffee table. I do what I can with the kid stuff, and make a coffee table while out of the board game box. Fast forward ten years, and I left for college. My mother decided that I needed a steamer to transport my things to my new 200-mile school.

In a strange way, things happen, we check a rental that landowners are reluctant to show, because the previous tenant left some furniture behind him. We went in too, and sitting in the middle of the floor was a coffee table-exactly the one my husband had bought at the auction. Two daughters joined in. My pretty rosewood table gave way to a softer version of the webbing, much better to deal with trips and lumps suffered by a pair of toddlers.
Moving into a bigger house meant it was time to buy a formal living room, and I found a wrought-iron table decorated with slanted glass, which was okay, because the girls were big. I bought my first coffee table to put in front of my living room, and it must have been a good choice, because my best friend went and bought the same house for her house. When I buy furniture for a vacation home, I take a large chair and sort it out with a tray. I’ve been thinking lately-maybe the sitting area in the master bedroom needs a small coffee table of hers.
